Abstract


Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and attitude of the residents of Seoul on fluoride use in the public water supply, dentifrice and the use of mouth rinse to prevent dental caries.

Methods: A total of 387 male and female residents of Seoul between the ages of 31¡­70 were surveyed using a questionnaire. The questions asked in the questionnaire included the source of drinking water, the source of cooking water, awareness of caries prevention effect of water fluoridation program, awareness of the cost-benefit of health insurance of water fluoridation program, approval of water fluoridation program, awareness of health safety of water fluoridation, awareness of fluoride containing compounds in dentifrice, approval of using fluoride dentifrice, awareness of school fluoride mouth rinse program.

Results: 88.4% of families surveyed used the public water supply for drinking water, 96.9% used public water as cooking water, which was rather high. 92.2% of the people surveyed approved the water fluoridation program in their community. But only 28.7% were aware of the safety of the fluoridation program. 92.2% of the people surveyed knew about fluoride dentifrice, and were willing to use them. However, only 75.2% of the people surveyed were aware of the school fluoride mouth rinse program in their own community.

Conclusions: Extensive oral health education programs on fluoride use to prevent dental caries at school and in communities are needed.
